{"id":1632,"date":"2023-07-30T17:50:23","date_gmt":"2023-07-30T16:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thomas-kopton.de\/vblog\/?p=1632"},"modified":"2024-10-18T09:54:35","modified_gmt":"2024-10-18T08:54:35","slug":"checking-ssl-tls-certificates-using-aria-operations-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thomas-kopton.de\/vblog\/?p=1632","title":{"rendered":"Checking SSL\/TLS Certificates using Aria Operations &#8211; Update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In my article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thomas-kopton.de\/vblog\/?p=538\">Checking SSL\/TLS Certificate Validity Period using vRealize Operations Application Monitoring Agents<\/a>&#8221; published in 2020, I have described how to check the remaining validity of SSL\/TLS certificates using <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Aria Operations<\/mark><\/strong>, or to be more specific, using vRealize Operations 8.1 and 8.2 back in the days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did not expect this post to be utilized by some many customers to check their SSL\/TLS certificates used to secure specifically non-VMware endpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As things might have changed in latest versions of Aria Operations including the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">VMware Aria Operations SaaS<\/mark> offering, In this blog post I will describe how to check and adjust the configuration if required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application Monitoring  &#8211; Agent Configuration<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The first change is, that there is no <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">Application Remote Collector<\/mark> (ARC) Aria Operations. Its functionality is now included in the <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Aria Operations Cloud Proxy<\/mark>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Cloud Proxy instance has to be deployed to the Aria Operations instance regardless the option being used, on-premises or SaaS. of the agent becomes available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agent basically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>discovers supported <strong><span style=\"color:#0f6d96\" class=\"has-inline-color\">applications<\/span><\/strong> and can be configured to monitor those applications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide the ability to run <span style=\"color:#0f6d96\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong>remote check<\/strong>,<\/span> like ICMP or TCP tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide the ability to <strong><span style=\"color:#0f6d96\" class=\"has-inline-color\">run custom scripts<\/span><\/strong> locally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to run scripts and report the integer output as metric back to Aria Operations is exactly what we need to run certificate checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual script is fairly easy and available, together with the Aria Operations dashboard, via my GitHub repo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/code.vmware.com\/samples?id=7464\">https:\/\/github.com\/tkopton\/aria-operations-content\/tree\/main\/SSLCheckFiles<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To let the agent run the script and provide a metric, we configure the agent with few options, the process has changed slightly in newer versions and you will find it under the Applications section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image the same script with different options or completely different scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All scripts need to be placed in <code>\/opt\/vmware<\/code> and the <code>arcuser<\/code> (as per default configuration) needs the execute permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dashboard<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The running custom scripts provide a metric per script.
